American Ninja Warrior 2 This Wednesday!

Monday, December 6th, 2010

After months of waiting, the new American Ninja Warrior will air this Wednesday, December 8th, on G4 at 8 pm Eastern. It has been confirmed that G4 will show 3 one-hour episodes back-to-back-to-back covering all the activities that went down in Venice Beach. I can only deduce that means everything from the opening round where about 250 people ran the course, including myself, during that awesome public “festival” on Saturday and Sunday. I also assume this means they’ll show the semi-finals of the top 30 runners from the opening round that happened on Monday in Venice Beach on a closed set. All in all, it should be 3 hours of American Ninja Warrior goodness.

I think there is a pretty good chance they’ll show my run…my kids would love to see it! In any case, watching it I’m sure will bring back the adrenaline and amazing camaraderie of that experience, and I look forward to seeing my friends compete (even though I was there, I missed some of their runs). I also look forward to being able to talk and blog in more detail about my experience, it’s been hard to operate under the Cone of Silence of their non-disclosure agreement these past few months.

I guess the following week, if I am right about the above breakdown, the show should cover the 15 finalists who performed the best in the semi-finals and their experience living in the training house for a week together Big-Brother-style where they competed against each other for the coveted 10 spots to go on Team America and compete in the legendary Ninja Warrior in Japan (Sasuke 26) against all our favorite Ninja Warrior competitors. Then maybe the week after that they show the top 10 competitors in Japan, but I’m not sure about that…maybe they will lump that into next week. But in any case, set your DVRs!

American Ninja Warrior 2 Starts Dec 8th

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

American Ninja Warrior 2 will begin airing on G4 on Wednesday December 8th.  Unlike last year where I believe they did a marathon and showed all the episodes back-to-back over the weekend, I think this year they will show a couple of episodes each Wednesday night for a couple of months.  There is more good American Ninja Warrior content this year as they have added a bunch of hours (technical programming term) with an expanded format.  I think the first few episodes will cover the insane opening round at Venice Beach where 200-300 competitors took their shot at the great 6 obstacle course they put together.  The next few episodes will show the semifinals where the top 30 competitors with the best times run an expanded 8 obstacle course hoping to make the top 15 finalists.  These top 15 finalists (next group of episodes) then move into a house Big Brother and Ultimate Fighter style to live together and compete against each over a week for the coveted 10 spots on Team America that would go to Japan to compete in the next Ninja Warrior competition (Sasuke 26).  Obviously the last few episodes is this team of 10 and how the do in Japan.  Should be great…can’t wait to see it all!  Set your calendars!

Mini Ninja in the House

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

When I was away for American Ninja Warrior 2, my 5 year old Milo wanted to inspire me and built his own obstacle course in the backyard to run through.  He filmed it and sent it to me while I was away at the competition!

Amazing Experience, Incredible Camaraderie

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Although I am bound by the Non-Disclosure Agreement all competitors must sign from talking about actual performance (they don’t want to ruin the suspense of the show when it airs in December), I’m still allowed to talk about my general experience and what it was like to compete.  It truly was an AMAZING experience attending the weekend event at Venice Beach and getting to meet the other obstacle course nutjobs who also competed in the event.  Running the course itself was certainly a dream realized and a ton of fun, but I have to say the comraderie among the competitors was singularly the most incredible thing of the experience.  Everybody was genuinely excited to meet and support each other, I didn’t see any instances of people “sizing each other up” and wishing failure on each other, it was nothing but love and support and mutual admiration.  I have to say it was one of the most unique experiences deeply connecting with a random assortment of other people.  Specific mad props to Brian Kretsch, Ryan Stratis, David Gabel, Mike Bernardo, Ron Dukes, Larry Rabena, Jason Huewe, Travis Furlanic, David Campbell, Gabe Cort, Christopher Christensen, Brett Sims, Ryoga Vee, Christian Okruhlik, Kelvin (Grandpa Ninja!), PJ Hradilek, Travis Rosen, Matthew, Chris, and the Amazing Oti for your friendship and support!  I know I forgot to include a few people here, but the love is still there!

Jacked Up and Ready to Go!

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Tomorrow morning I head out to LA to compete in American Ninja Warrior 2 to be held at Venice Beach over the weekend, and MAN am I jacked up and ready to go!  Apparently G4 has really set up a great festival format that will have not only the competitors’ course, but a kids course, a museum to Ninja Warrior history, a meet-and-greet section with two of the Ninja Warrior Grand Champions (Nagano and Urushihara), and all sorts of merchandise.   They are anticipating over 100,000 to come to the event over the weekend.  Should be a madhouse at Venice Beach!

To further prepare for the obstacle course itself, last Tuesday I got up at 5 am and returned home after midnight in a marathon day with 12 hours traveling in cars and through airports just for the privilege of going to Santa Cruz, California, to train for a few hours with Ninja Warrior icon David Campbell on his legendary backyard obstacle course.  David Campbell is a hardcore Ninja Warrior nut, and competed in Ninja Warrior in Japan (2009) and in American Ninja Warrior 1, and is known far-and-wide in the Ninja Warrior community here in the US for both his prowess and his awesome backyard obstacle course.  Figuring that what I most needed at this point is some specific obstacle training, I flew out to Santa Cruz to train with David for a few hours in his backyard and get tips from him on some of those specific obstacles.  Many of his obstacles are harder than what they have in American Ninja Warrior, designed to the more rigorous Japanese Ninja Warrior specs.  It was great practice, and I got to train on the Warped Wall, the Spider Jump, the Jumping Bars, the basic Rope Swing, the Sextuple Step, and the Salmon Ladder.  It was awesome!  Some things were harder than I expected (Warped Wall), and other things were easier than I expected (Jumping Bars and Salmon Ladder).  The Spider Wall was a bitch, which was pretty much what I expected, but I think the one I may face in American Ninja Warrior will be easier (it was much easier last year than the Japanese version).  No doubt I am better prepared for having done this training session, and only wish that I could train on it a bunch more like David and his nephew Travis (he was a finalist in ANW 1 last year and competed in Japan).  David and Travis were great…very cool and supportive (thanks guys!).  It was a great experience, and, man, was I sore the next couple of days!

Anyway, my run time on Sunday is at 10 am, so I get to hang out all day on Saturday and watch the other competitors give their best on the course, and hopefully pick up some tips of what to do and what not to do.  I can’t WAIT to find out what obstacles they have on the course this year!  Then I can go to bed Saturday night dreaming of running the course and surmounting those specific obstacles, and hopefully rock it in the first group of runners Sunday morning so I can hang out for the rest of the day seeing if my time makes the top 30 slots to advance to the semifinals.  About 300-350 people will run the course in the opening round over Saturday and Sunday, and only 30 will advance, so it is sort of a long shot, but this whole adventure is sort of a long shot!  All I can do is my best, and with my training the last few months, my healed hand (yeah!), and my training with David on his obstacle course, I am as ready as I’m going to be.

Wish me luck, and please channel some strength, determination, focus and agility my way on Sunday morning, I’m going to need it!  I guess I’ll only have to follow the advice of my 5 year old who said this morning, “Daddy, if you feel like you are slipping and going to fall, just hang on!”
