The Waiting Game for American Ninja Warrior 5

With today being the official close of the video submission and application period for American Ninja Warrior 5, and having personally gotten my video in last week, now begins the painful annual rite-of-passage of the “Waiting Game” when we’ve done everything we can and we’re simply in the land of indeterminate limbo while we wait to hear back whether we’ll be blessed with an invitation to toe the line at American Ninja Warrior or not. In every season except the first one, which I didn’t compete in and thus can’t speak to, the competitors have heard only a week or two before the actual competition whether they’d be given a guaranteed spot or not. Yes, insane. Particularly when considering that the competition is often held during the week when most of the normal world would be busy with their jobs, which attests to the level of conviction we competitors have to compete and willingness to drop everything on short notice just to step onto the course and get our crack at obstacle course glory, or infamy (as the case often is).

We’ve been given assurances that this year casting will work hard to give us more advanced notice about when and where the competitions will be held, and whether we’ll be invited to compete. While they have said basically the same thing in past seasons, I actually believe them this year…there seems to be more continuity in the casting staff this season, and a genuine commitment. So, fingers crossed. Rumors are that we’ll hear in the next week or two the “when” and “where” pieces of that puzzle. I’ve heard that there will be 4 cities which will host competitions this year, one more than last year, and that the city locations will serve as proxies for the regions that structured the competition last year.

For my fellow American Ninja Warrior 5 applicants who are also suffering the start of the Waiting Game right now, here are three tips that I offer from my experience going through this stage three times before:
#1 “Act As If You’re Already Accepted” – You can agonize over whether you’ll be invited or not, and this worrying is totally non-productive. Fretting for weeks is unpleasant, and if you have a significant other this distracted fretting can really freakin’ annoy them as you only partly pay attention to anything they have to talk about not related to American Ninja Warrior. Do yourself a favor and do a Jedi Mind Trick on yourself, and convince yourself that you have already been accepted and are just patiently waiting to compete.
#2 “Train Hard, but Not too Hard” – The excitement and anxiety the weeks and days before the competition is hard to deal with. I see many ninjas channel this into some ridiculous new escalated training routines, often attempting new tricks of ninja-ery, which often leads to injuries. While it is awesome to be in peak physical condition for the event, it’s a huge freaking bummer to injure yourself right before the competition after months of training and dreaming. Believe me, I jacked myself up the DAY before American Ninja Warrior 2 because I was attempting a silly feat of ninja-ery, and I almost couldn’t compete, and it definitely influenced my failure on the Spider Wall. Don’t do this to yourself.
#3 “Commit Yourself to Walking On” – If you really want to compete, you should be willing to walk on. With the short notice we are likely to get about whether we have a guaranteed spot or not, you’ll have had to clear your schedule to compete anyway by the time you find out if you have a guaranteed invite. Last year I didn’t get a guaranteed spot, and drove 3 days with the kids and wife packed into the family SUV to try for a walkon spot. While it sucked and I asked myself many many times on that drive (and standing in the walkon line before dawn on competition day), whether I was mentally unstable, I’m totally glad that I walked on. It was my best year on American Ninja Warrior yet, both from a performance and an experience perspective, and I never would have gotten that if I hadn’t manned up to walk on. In fact, my whole American Ninja Warrior experience would probably have ended there as I doubt I would have gotten the support from my family to try for ANW5 after not competing in ANW4, and no doubt pouting for months afterwards to their annoyance. Committing yourself to this Tip #3, walking on no matter what, will really help you with Tip #1, knowing you are going to compete and relieving yourself of worrying.

Hope those tips help, and hope I can follow them myself!

Excellent points for new comers! Many people don’t realize how much commitment is required just to try out!!

Thanks man, I had to learn these the hard way 😉 In the spirit of our amazing ninja brotherhood, thought I’d share these tips and maybe spare some folks a bit of agony. Long way from our early days on the G4TV boards, huh?

  • Josh Reitan

Great approach. I saw you run last year. Did not get a chance to meet you. Hopefully I will get a chance to introduce myself this year.

  • Anonymous

Thanks Josh! Did you submit to compete this year? Please do come introduce yourself if we cross paths this year!

Gonna be hard to miss Matt–he’s the guy that’s bigger than Johnny Moseley. :)

Matt, just wanna tell you how much I appreciate you man it was because of your blog that I found out the casting call had already happened!(Found it the first week of March)=o. I had put myself in G4’s mailing list for the casting call but never got an email. Nevertheless I got my video together and did about 7 hours of editing in one sitting Monday night with a friend of mine. You can check it out here—>https://www.dropbox.com/s/26myy3ow7jolx6p/ANW5-HD%20720p.mov Hopefully I get accepted but if not then yes, I will be walking on!!! Hope to see you there! – Karlo

Excellent! Love hearing that! Hope you get on to compete, it’s an amazing experience, and come over to say hi if you see me at the event!

  • http://twitter.com/Higeboshi Brian Boling

One of the Sasuke Maniacs posted this: “Just got a reply from a representative.

“Yes, we have your video and application. Thanks for checking.

    We
will be letting people know if they have been selected to run starting
this coming week. The southwest qualifying round will take place in
    Venice April 5-6″”

No idea on the accuracy of that, and if they’re going to be letting everyone know or rotating through regions (like say, letting the SW competitors know next week, then NW the week after that, etc.).

1 more point i would add would be “Be confident not cocky” last year even though i was walking on i thought that i easily would make the warped wall and went out on the quad steps. this year i’ve trained on mock steps and have a feel for them but am soley focusing on them first.

  • Anonymous

Good point. The course has a way of humbling us all.

  • Anonymous

Now THAT’s very interesting. I wouldn’t have expected the first city to happen that soon. I’d imagine if that truly is the case they’d announce that pretty soon and starting contacting folks. What’s a bit confusing to me is that they use the term “Southwest” although I’ve been told they are probably not going to use the regional structure like they did last year, instead opting for 4 cities that sort of serve as regions themselves. Ahh…the period of speculation 😉

  • http://twitter.com/Higeboshi Brian Boling

And now someone on the Facebook page is saying something else entirely. I’m just calling shenanigans on both posters until it’s officially announced.

  • kerry collins

Matt, how’d they get a hold of you last time? Was it a call or an email to let you know you were running the course?

  • http://twitter.com/Higeboshi Brian Boling

It looks like as of 4:00 CST today (Mar. 18) the tryouts page is still accepting applications. I don’t know if they missed their target amount, or if it’s just an oversight. Hopefully it won’t delay things too much.

  • Anonymous

In previous years I’ve gotten calls, but one year I got an email first and then later a call. They mostly seem to be calling these days, but not exclusively. I’m not expecting to hear anything any time soon!

  • Anonymous

Not surprising. Every year they have extended the deadline. Sort of annoying. They said last week that they are definitively NOT accepting late submissions, but of course they’ll do whatever they want 😉 Don’t hold your breath on hearing anything any time soon, I’m not expecting to hear anything until at least April.

  • Lee Gifford

Is there a conformation e-mail after the application is submitted? I saw that everything was attached correctly and I got the successfully submitted screen in my browser, but I figured I would get a conformation e-mail, and I didn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/Higeboshi Brian Boling

I didn’t get one, and I believe Matt didn’t either (he said something about calling them to confirm).

  • Lee Gifford

Thanks for the quick reply, glad to know it.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, there was no confirmation email that they sent out confirming that they received the video and application, so not to worry!

  • Guest2353234532

Nope, it really is April 5-6 for the SouthWest. I’m the user Brian is referring to. Here is an image of the email I received.

I edited out my personal info for obvious reasons.

  • Guest2353234532

That being said, I see the person you are referring to on Facebook that is spouting a bunch of different dates. The “Moseph Legit” guy. You shouldn’t believe someone who has no image, much less a name like that.

  • Anonymous

Cool, thanks for sharing that info! Hope they publicly announce that this week and start telling people!

  • Jeff B

Good luck Matt! I hope you make it. It’s really inspiring to read about your journey and it’s nice of you to share your experience, tips & tricks with the world.

Just out of curiosity, as you awaited your fate in the Qualifying Round’s qualifier pit, were you able to tell how they chose the order of those who ran (aside from the walk-ons)?

    Cheers!

  • Anonymous

Thank you Jeff, I appreciate that! To answer your question, the run order in the opening round of the regionals is random. They usually assign you a run group (for instance, the 3 pm run group…usually an hourly run group), and then assign an order within that run group. Then, of course, for the regional finals it is in inverse order of finish. Hope that helps.

  • Lee Gifford

Hey Matt, I was a little wary about posting my tryout tape anywhere, but i posted it to youtube so friends and family can see and I have been reading your blog so I figured I’d put it up here and see what you think. I also am not sure if it is okay to post, but have seen so many I figured I’d go ahead and see what someone out there thinks of mine.

Nice video Lee, good luck! Are you probably know, there are a couple of other ninjas with competitive cheer backgrounds that have done very well in the competition – Andrew Karsen and Dorian Cedars – so that athletic lineage should be recognized as strong by the casting folks.

  • Lee Gifford

Thanks Matt! I didn’t have much time to put the video together and many circumstances prevented me from getting shots I wanted, like me training inside of my gym and some jumping from obstacles and more tumbling. I just got so worked up in doing the video with my friend that we forgot a few things and focused more on style. I hope I make it, it would mean alot to me!

  • Jeff B

Thanks Matt! I’m thinking of walking-on in Venice this year and am trying to envision what the day would look like (though I’m sure everything can always go out the window too). One more question if you don’t mind: At what time did the regional qualifiers end? In other words, when did the last runner run?

  • Anonymous

Hi Jeff. From my experience, the walkons tend to be at the very beginning of the day and at the very end. They put walkons early I think to make certain that nothing is “broken” that would goof up the runs of guaranteed invites (sort of the “testers”…I was runner #5 as a walkon last season), and at the end of the day when they have gone through the guaranteed invite runs and they still have some time left to fill in.

  • http://twitter.com/Higeboshi Brian Boling

This was just posted on the Facebook page: http://www.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/3429007

Auction to meet Matt Iseman on the set April 6.

Are they not going to be announcing the filming dates in any official capacity anywhere or something?

  • kerry collins

Nice research Brian! I would say this is a confirmation of the date.

I received an email from Canam Productions that told me the dates of the venice beach runs but in my email it said do not post the dates as it has not been released publicly. But I am a little confused as the email sent from Canam to the guy above shows the dates but does not say do not post…weird

  • Kevin H

These are great tips. Good luck with everything this year.

In regards to the invitations, do you know if ANW normally sends emails to those who do not get invited?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.weekley.3 Joshua Weekley

hope they pick me this year been trying for years

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.weekley.3 Joshua Weekley

Just in case I have to walk on… When would you suggest getting to the place? The night before or just the morning of?

  • Anonymous

Nah, they just ignore those that they aren’t inviting. Would be nicer if they contacted everybody, but this is Hollywood after all 😉

  • Anonymous

Depends on the venue. I heard that at Venice Beach people line up starting the night before, but I’ve also heard that the Venice Beach police won’t let you do that until a certain hour. At the Cotton Bowl in Dallas they didn’t allow overnighters, so I got there in the early morning. So…hard to say!

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.mirho Charles Mirho

Great advice, Matt. Thank you for sharing. Like you I am an over-40 contestant; I think we can show these younger guys something (and maybe inspire the 40+ demographic of viewers). I’ll in the NW region so may not hear back for a few more weeks. The ANW casting people have been very helpful and encouraging every step of the way. Thanks to your advice, I’ll probably walk on if not given a guaranteed slot. I went and looked up your run at ANW4, and have to say, Nice job man! You clearly trained hard despite your busy personal and professional life. I can relate.

  • Anonymous

Thanks Charles, I appreciate that! We middleaged guys can still bring it!

  • kerry collins

Charles, NW/SW regions are going first in venice early April. We had better hope we hear something back soon!

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.mirho Charles Mirho

I’ve been in touch with four guys I know (two who are repeat contestants) from NW and SW who applied, and none have had a callback. Maybe means none were picked, or maybe means casting is still culling videos and cutting it close. No sense pondering it too hard, as the Dao teaches, what will be will be.

  • kerry collins

interesting Charles…very interesting indeed! I guess will just have to wait and see : )

I am also in the 40+ category. I am not trying to get on ANW to just take it off my bucket list, I am honestly, like most, in it to win it. And I feel that I can do everything well except maybe for stage 3 of finals looks impossible!

Did you post your submission video on youtube?

  • Anonymous

Very reliable word is that they haven’t called anybody yet, and apparently will start calling folks in the West Coast regions tomorrow (Monday). Also, they allegedly will also announce all the cities and dates tomorrow. Of course, they have a far-from-perfect record of meeting deadlines they set for themselves 😉

  • kerry collins

This is great news as I am in Oregon (NW). Well, even if I don’t get a call, you have inspired me Matt to go for the dreaded walk on! I will be in Venice 4/5/6th. Fingers and toes crossed for the call.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.mirho Charles Mirho

Hey Kerry where are you; I’m in Oregon, on the South Coast, near the CA border (Gold Beach). Great meeting another 40+ ninja wannabe in Oregon; thought I was all alone in that regard. I didn’t post my video on YouTube, I wasn’t sure if that was ok with Canan without a release (first time at this). I come from an unusual background – I’m a patent lawyer who has done urban climbing (climbing buildings, bridges, signs, etc.) and freerunning for about 30 years. I doubt there’s anyone quite like me who’s every tried out for ANW. Of course we are all individuals, so I’d be very happy to view your submission video if it’s posted somewhere. And yes, I’ll walk on if not picked (thanks for the inspiration, Matt!)

  • kerry collins

Cool Charles! I am from Eugene and living in Independence Oregon.

Interesting you are a patent attorney. I may need to get together with you on that someday. quirky.com has chosen 3 inventions of mine and has ripped me off each time!

In regards to the video, here is the link:
    http://youtu.be/nUFK47p9pBg

I put it together real quick. Next year I am going all out on the video and stunts. Hope to see you in Venice! Or should I say, see you in Venice as I too will walk on if necessary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.mirho Charles Mirho

Checked you vid; love the hand balance on the chair on the roofline! You show a lot of personality in the video, and talk about adversity – things the casting likes to see. You have a real shot at getting to run. Yes, I will see you at the tryouts one way or another.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kerry.collins.180 Kerry Collins

Thanks Charles. I hope you kick some butt on the course!

  • rory

What are the rules for ‘walking on.’ Do they only accept a certain number of people? Should I be prepared to wait in line for 3 days? Is there someone to bribe? Give the the inside details, as I don’t think my story is compelling enough to be picked.
